What Is Jumpin' 4 Judaism ?

At Beth Radom’s Jumpin’ 4 Judaism program, our goal is to have students build a foundation of knowledge in the areas of Jewish Studies, t’filah (prayer), Jewish culture and the Hebrew Language. By introducing students to the wisdom and core values contained in our vast Jewish tradition, students will begin to formulate a foundation for a lifetime of Jewish learning.

Our Unique Approach to Jewish Education

Beth Radom prides itself on making our children feel good about their Jewish education. Children today are enrolled in more extra-curricular activities than ever before. It is a fact that Supplementary religious school programs must compete with other extra curricular activities such as sports, music lessons, dance classes, etc. In our effort to make Jewish learning about a fun and productive experience for your child, we offer a unique and dynamic approach to Jewish education. Our program consists of both weekly small group tutorials and bi-monthly Sunday morning programming. Through small group tutorials, varied classroom activities and family education, our learning initiatives are an exceptional educational model for our present and future generations.

Top Five Education Initiatives

  1. Students will be introduced to Hebrew as the language of the Jewish people.
  2. Students will begin to formulate a sense of their own Jewish identity.
  3. Learning will be coordinated with other synagogue activities.
  4. Child/Parent Learning is an integral part of educating our youth.
  5. Learning about Judaism should be fun!

THE HEBREW LANGUAGE Small Group Tutorials

At Jumpin’ 4 Judaism, we believe that a child’s learning potential is realized through small group instruction. Many educational studies have shown the positive results of smaller grouping and tutorials in which a child’s individual needs are addressed. In light of this research we seek to give your child the best possible learning environment to have them reach their potential.

Your child will be assigned to a small group of students who are both comparable in age and ability. An instructor will work with these students on improving their Hebrew reading and comprehension skills in a helpful and effective 60 minute session.

These small group tutorials will ensure that your child gets the attention they need while they acquire the basic Hebrew language skills, essential for their Jewish Education. The sessions will be held approximately once a week through the school calendar year and will be scheduled at a predetermined day, time and location that are convenient to both your child(ren) and the instructor.

Sessions will also focus on Hebrew reading and comprehension using many of the common Hebrew prayers that are recited in our weekday and Shabbat Liturgy. The familiarity with these prayers will ensure that your child is on the right track in becoming prepared for their bar/bat mitzvah.

JEWISH LIVING PROGRAM (Sundays)

In addition to acquiring basic Hebrew language skills, your child will be enriched with learning about a variety of Jewish topics and experiencing Judaism from a hands-on approach. To complement your family time as well as to create a learning environment that is positive for your child’s Jewish Education experience, students will gather approximately every other Sunday from 9:30 am to 12:00pm in our synagogue-learning centre. Students will be divided according to their age and stage of development, where they will experience Judaism in a modern and dynamic approach to learning described in the various methods as listed below:

T’FILA & ZMIROT (PRAYER AND MUSIC)

Prayer and Music are an integral part of Jewish life. Each session, students will have the opportunity to pray with their peers at our Sunday morning T’filah. Parents are also invited and encouraged to attend. During T’filah, students will have the opportunity to lead others both individually and in groups in the recitation and/or chanting of some of our major prayers in our effort to help them become comfortable with the Daily, Shabbat and Festival Prayer services. In addition to T’filah, participants will have song sessions with our Cantor, where they will learn the joyous melodies that our ancestors have been singing for centuries. From holiday favourites, Israeli music, Sephardic music, to the songs of the Chassidim, participants will develop a repertoire of Jewish music that will last them a lifetime.

DRAMA (THEATRE)

One of the best ways that our children can learn the great Jewish stories of the bible and our tradition is through the art of drama and theatre. From re-enacting the Purim story to creating their own script for Moses’ revelation on Mount Sinai, your child will experience Jewish history through a creative lens that will speak to them on a multitude of levels. Students will present their dramatic talents for family and friends at our end of year picnic.

AMANUT & VISHUL (ART & COOKING)

Participants will engage in various arts and crafts activities that correspond to our Jewish calendar and are related to core Jewish values. From baking puffy Hamentashen on Purim, to making savory latkes on Chanukah, your child will experience Judaism through one of our most sacred and tastiest traditions…food!

RIKUD & CHUGIM (FOLK DANCE & GAMES)

Your children will have the opportunity to learn Israeli Folk Dancing! This exciting activity will get your child off the computer and get them movin’ and groovin’ while they connect to Judaism and Israel on a whole new level.

B’YACHAD (PARENT AND CHILD EDUCATION)

Parents and/or other family members are invited and encouraged to learn with their children on B’yachad days. From studying Jewish texts to preparing for an upcoming holiday, to performing local acts of Social Justice, we invite you to come and help your child form a positive Jewish identity, while at the same time rejuvenating your own! Core Jewish values will be discussed and families will have the opportunity to talk about how they can maintain a Jewish way of life both in the home as well as in the synagogue. (Approximately 5 Sundays/per academic year)
